Trump -- banned from Twitter, Facebook and YouTube following the deadly riot at the Capitol -- says the social network was created to "fight back against Big Tech."
Former President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he's launching a new social network called Truth Social, whose goal is to push back against Big Tech, according to a press release purported to come from one of his companies. The Trump Media and Technology Group, which made the announcement, said the social network will begin a limited beta launch in November, with a wider rollout expected in the first quarter of 2022.
"I created Truth Social and TMGT to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech," Trump said in the press release sent to the media. "We live in a world where the Taliban has a presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American president has been silenced."
There's a site for Truth Social where people can join a waiting list for the social network, as well as a link to preorder the iOS app. Screenshots of the app suggest Truth will have profile pages with a Twitter-like timeline of posts.
Plans to launch a new social network underscore how Trump is trying to rejoin the online public conversation after Twitter, Facebook and Google-owned YouTube booted him from their platforms following the deadly US Capitol Hill riot in January.
Facebook said Trump would be suspended from its platform until at least 2023. The social network would then "look to experts to assess whether the risk to public safety has receded." Facebook made the decision after a board tasked with reviewing its toughest content moderation decisions upheld Trump's suspension from the platform. YouTube has said it would lift Trump's suspension from its platform when the "risk of violence has decreased."
Truth Social (also stylized TRUTH Social) is an announced social media platform to be launched by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). It will have a limited launch on Apple's App Store in November 2021, before a full public launch in 2022.
Former President of the United States Donald Trumpraised the prospect of building a new social media platform after he was banned from Facebook and Twitter in 2021, following his response to the 2021 United States Capitol attack.
On October 20, 2021, Trump Media & Technology Group issued a press release which announced the platform, slated to enter limited beta in November 2021. Hours later, a URL was leaked across various sites which permitted users to sign up and use the platform. Users began trolling on the site, creating parody accounts, and posting humorous and comedic content. The link was later taken offline.
The social media platform announcement follows the October 20, 2021, merger of Trump Media & Technology Group with special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Digital World Acquisition Corp. The merger values the Trump Media & Technology Group at $875 million, as of October 21, 2021. On October 21, 2021, shares of Digital World Acquisition Corp. rose by 400% following the announcement of Truth Social. Trading of the company's stock was halted multiple times due to its volatility.
SPACs are structured such that they first sell shares to the public and then raise funds from investors to later acquire a private company, the identity of which cannot be known by investors in advance. Some investors were surprised to learn that their investment money was being used to finance a Trump company. SPACs have long had questionable reputations because they can give companies access to public markets that would otherwise be difficult, due to a poor or nonexistent track record.
Truth Social uses a custom version of the free and open-source software Mastodon, which is typically used to connect to a broader collection of social networking websites known as the Fediverse. However, Truth Social's version of Mastodon removes several features, including polls and post visibility options. Mastodon is released under the AGPLv3 license, which requires any derivative source code to be publicly available. Because Truth Social's terms describe its software as proprietary, Mastodon founder and lead developer Eugen Rochko has said: "that would be a problem, as that would indicate a license violation".
The platform is modelled heavily after Twitter. Users can make posts ("Truths") and share other users' posts ("Re-Truths"). The platform also features a newsfeed, called a "Truth Feed", as well as a notification system.
“We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American president has been silenced,” Trump said in a statement. “This is unacceptable.”
A Guardian request for a comment from the Trump Media & Technology Group on the new venture was not returned before publication.
Though the platform is not officially open to users yet, some were able to access the app and create an account through a URL that has now been taken down. A reporter at the Daily Dot was able to create an account and profile as @DonaldTrump.
In July, Trump sued Facebook, Twitter, and Google for allegedly censoring him. The companies have so far upheld their bans and suspensions on the former president, though Facebook plans to revisit its decision in two years.
Pranksters have already defaced Trump’s new social network
Truth Social has some unusual rules for a Trump-run site: It reserves the right to ban users and safeguard itself from lawsuits with Section 230 protections. It also prohibits ‘excessive use of capital letters.’
Trump Media and Technology Group just announced TRUTH Social, a rival platform to Twitter, Facebook, and all of the other Big Tech giants. But like other specialized social media platforms, TRUTH will be a target for hackers, and it could leave your private info exposed. We’re not just speculating here—TRUTH Social has already been compromised, and it’s not even out yet!
Just two hours after Trump Media and Technology Group announced TRUTH Social, a group of Twitter users managed to access the beta website and make accounts with usernames like @donaldtrump and @mikepence. This beta website isn’t supposed to go live until November, but as reported by Insider, people simply guessed its URL to gain early access.
TRUTH Social’s beta page is now inaccessible to outsiders. But those who gained early access made some interesting discoveries. Most notably, TRUTH Social uses the open-source Mastodon 3.0 social media codebase, apparently without much customization (and without providing credit, which violates Mastodon’s terms).
Trevor Noah Predicts Trump Will Post Dares on Truth Social
Noah did an impression of Trump posting on his new social media site: “OK, I shared my truth, now I dare you to hang Mike Pence.”
Donald Trump’s new social media app, Truth Social, was the talk of late night on Thursday. Trevor Noah touched on the site’s terms of service requirements for the “truths” users can post.
“And, also, you know what this means: If Trump is posting ‘truths,’ knowing him, eventually he’s going to start posting ‘dares.’ ‘OK, I shared my truth, now I dare you to hang Mike Pence,’” Noah joked while doing a Trump impression

Why trump launched this platform?
Former president of United States launched this platform as his social media accounts either got temporarily suspended or even banned due to his controversial posts. Accounts were suspended following the attack on the Capitol back in January 2021.
Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG)
This newly merged entity is chaired by Trump. It will form a rival for the liberal media consortium. The company was established through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). Bloomberg’s Matt Levine writes:
I am not going to pretend to make a business case for [a Trump social media network]—there is a long history of hilarious failure in the “social media for Trump” category—but maybe you can. It is not a sure thing, in any case. Maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn’t. When Twitter Inc. went public, it had never been profitable, and it was, you know, a real social network that people used. Maybe Twitter But Trump would immediately be profitable, but boy, I have some doubts. On the other hand, if Donald Trump launched a company that was like, “I am going to start a social media platform for Trump fans,” could he get people to buy the stock? I think that two fundamental lessons of the last few years are:
- You can get people to buy any stock; and
- Donald Trump can get people to buy anything.
So if Donald Trump announced, “Hey, I’m gonna do a social media company, buy some stock,” people would buy some stock. And then he’d get a lot of money. And then if the social media platform did not end up being profitable—as I cannot imagine it would be!—then he would, uh, still have that money? And if the social media platform did not end up being launched—if Trump and his crack team of technologists just couldn’t actually build a well-functioning online social network—then he would, uh, still have that money? And if there was no crack team of technologists at all, if nobody even tried to build the social media platform—then you see where I am going with this, right?
The point is that if you launch a company with the goal of making it profitable, you have to, like, have a workable business plan and execute on it and deal with a million different operational complexities. If you launch a company with the goal of selling a lot of stock, you have to get people to trust you and give you their money. There is some overlap between those things! But they are different things!
